The Piercy Motto: Time for One, Time for TeamMaking time for everyone in a home with ten children can be challenging, but Boys Town Family-Teachers Bruce and Janele Piercy bring balance to a busy home. “It is all a matter of planning,” said Janele, who is accustomed to this pace having grown up with seven siblings and foster children. “We plan our week and execute it, all the while teaching the kids skills for living.” Conversations shared while running errands, working on the lawn, or playing pool present opportunities for Bruce and Janele to connect individually with the eight boys in their care. They ask each boy how his day went when he returns from school. Before they go to sleep, Janele encourages them with positive words for the next day. “We try to make sure that we have quality time with all of the children,” Bruce said. “If we spend time with them individually, it makes them feel loved and that helps make them successful.”“The kids are patient with us because they know when they get that time, they’re going to be number one,” Janele added. While focusing on each individual child, the Piercys stress the importance of family and being part of a team. They encourage the kids to be selfless, be aware of when a family member needs their help, and “go the extra mile.” This family value of service to others extends into the community as well. After the Fourth of July, the Piercy home helped clean the grounds at Rosenblatt Stadium, and this week they helped the Salvation Army supply back packs to underprivileged children.
“The kids are able to see they are very lucky in what they have,” Janele said. “It helps them to see from the viewpoint of some who are not as fortunate as they are.” The Piercys exemplify a strong commitment to working with at-risk youth, having first worked at Boys Town Texas where they helped open the first girls home in 1989. Since then, they have worked as Family-Teachers and in other positions at Boys Town Nevada and California. After some time away from the organization, they returned to Boys Town as Family-Teachers last summer, this time at Home Campus. “We just missed the Boys Town philosophy and attitude,”
Janele said. “The support system at Boys Town is fabulous.
All of the families around us are experiencing similar situations
and challenges. We share our experiences, and it helps us to grow
as Family-Teachers.”
